The German option

Every year, hoards of Nepali students are found jetting off to foreign countries for education and work. While the US and Australia are probably the most popular destinations at present, we should keep our minds open to other possible alternatives. Germany, for instance, is a viable option, and the number of students applying to this European nation has grown over time, as demonstrated by the proliferation of consultancies in Kathmandu that help students to get into German educational institutions.
One of the most unique aspects of the education system in Germany is the fact that courses are free. Yes, that’s right, free. While tuition fees in colleges in the US and other countries can often be mindboggling, German universities provide courses free of cost, owing to the fact that these universities are state-funded. Students need only bear their living expenses—the rest is taken care of. Of course, there are some universities that do charge certain fees per semester, but this is limited to a couple of hundred Euros, nothing extravagant. Besides, considering students are allowed to work 90 days a year means that they have ample opportunity to earn some extra cash while they study.
It’s a fact that German universities—of which there are more than 380—are internationally renowned, made famous by their association with scholars such as Humboldt, Einstein, Hegel and Marx. What’s more, they have now introduced Bachelor and Masters degree programs adapted to international standards and credit systems, thereby reducing the entry barriers for international students.
As for post-graduation job opportunities, many of my own acquaintances have found employment following the end of their academic pursuits. It helps that there is often close cooperation between the universities and industries, as well as research organisations, a link that helps students gain insight into the world they will one day be working in. International students are generally given an additional year after their graduation to stay in the country, during which they need to be gainfully employed. This will also greatly boost their chances of getting a permanent residence permit in the future.
International students coming to Germany are usually put off by the fact that they have to learn the language, but for me, it was more of an added bonus rather than an obstacle. I got to learn a language, and honestly, it’s not that difficult, particularly if you’re a fluent English speaker. In practice, it takes about six months to one year to learn the language to the point where you are able to keep up with your university course. There are some German universities that have begun international courses in Management, Engineering and Social Science in English but besides theses, most faculties are run in German.
Besides the academic opportunities, which I found to be plentiful, Germany was overall a lovely place to live in. With well-developed infrastructure, beautiful cities, and a level of perceived safety—at least where I was living—makes it a place I relive fondly in my memories.
Instead of the predictable circuit of countries, Nepali students need to broaden their horizons. Just because it might be intimidating to have to learn a new language doesn’t mean that places like Germany are impossible to live in, it just makes the experience more rewarding. For me, the ten years I spent there was probably the most intellectually-stimulating length of time I’ve ever had the fortune of passing anywhere, and would sincerely recommend Germany to anyone considering going abroad for their studies.

American Education System

American education system is bit confusing and extremely dissimilar from the education system of your native country. The educational options available in this country are fabulous especially in the higher level. Basically, the USA education system comprises of 12 complete years of primary and secondary education before getting admission in the university or graduate college. It is not necessary that these 12 years of basic education must be completed from within USA and hence, students from other countries are also welcome for higher education. The highlight of USA education system is its adaptability of cutting-edge technology in all the fields of study. In addition to this truth, another impressive element about US education system is that many world leaders, bureaucrats and prominent business tycoons cherish the education system of the country after studying from there.
Needless to say, acquiring an educational experience from the land of USA will drive people to a magnificent and brilliant career life. The education of US starts at the age of five in the 'primary school'. After completing five grades, the student will enter 'secondary school' to get the 'high school diploma' after successful completion of twelve grades. Those who complete high school and would like to attend college or university must attend 'undergraduate' school. These are schools that offer either a two-year degree or a four-year degree in a specific course of study. The course of study is called the 'major', which comprises of the main or special subjects.
The next level of education system in the US is 'graduate school'. After getting the undergraduate degree, the education can be continued for next two levels. The first one is, studying to get 'master's degree' as an extended specialized study of the subject taken up in the under graduation course. It is of two years duration. The next level is to pursue PhD that leads to a doctorate degree. The minimum duration for this is about three years and may vary up to even seven to eight years depending upon the specialized and chosen topic and the ability of students in presenting their thesis. Study abroad students who aspire to go to any part of USA for further studies are advised to have clear idea about the education system of the country.

UK vs. USA Education System

Universities and Colleges are reputedly the hallowed halls of intellectual development, the schools of maturation from where the leaders of our world emerge to set the world ablaze with the fruits of intellectualism. However, the produce all vary in flavours according the nature of the curriculum prescribed. The most marked divergence of tastes lie within institutions separated by oceans, and continents. Although the UK and USA share an Anglo-Saxon culture, disparities are marked within ideals of their respective education systems, further being indicative of their particular cultures.
In the USA, no matter if one is enrolled in a state school or a private liberal arts college, it is expected that students will study academic subjects outside their intended field of study. The premise of which is to cultivate a rounded individual, comfortably conversant with all mediums of academic literature, whether of artistic or scientific character. Hence on American campuses you will discover scenarios where historians may be taking courses in astrophysics.
Needless to say such a scenario would not engender smiles on the faces of their British counterparts, who've journeyed through system of education where from an early age specialization has been expected. Thus by the time these students commence their undergraduate training they are only expected to study within their chosen area of study. (This happens to less of a degree in Scottish universities, where students are encouraged to explore topics beyond their major, although in reality students rarely venture beyond their chosen faculty.
These structural differences influence changes within the deliverance of classes. Due to obligation of students to study outside their fields of study the US prescribes a broader, but less in depth of an enquiry of study. Whereas, breadth is shunned in favour of more narrowly focused, but deeper lines of study within British establishments. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses. Critics of British education would point towards the enforced learning of unnecessary information, whereas defenders of the British universities may counter by accusations of dumbing down in college classes. My personal perception, based from studying in two small universities/colleges in the UK and the US, that aside from a divergence between curriculum's, there is a marked difference of ethos between UK and USA higher education institutions.
On American campuses, work is constantly requested from students on a daily basis. In contrast the British university calendar invites extra-intensive work in patches, separated by periods of lulls, thus creating large tracts of downtime between assignments. It this downtime that characterises the British university lifestyle where social life is the veritable engine of UK university life, pushing academia into the passenger seat. In contrast academia takes the fore in America colleges, largely due to structured system in American colleges brought by an emphasis upon teaching. Work is definitely more intensive in American colleges, which is to be expected given that American students pay significantly more than their British counterparts, and hence American students tend to be more motivated than their apathetic British counterparts.
So concluding with my personal endnote of bias, I would have to admit that American Colleges invite more of a rigorous, dynamic intellectually arousing ethos, though at the expense of cultivating an active social scene. The lessons derived within the UK university establishment arise from outside the classroom within the pubs and clubs, where social development rather than intellectual development takes preponderance. Choose your pick!

To New Zealand-New Zealand grads are valued the world over

Nepal and New Zealand have shared a close bond ever since  Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s successful 1953 ascent of Everest. New Zealand is a land that welcomes Nepalis, and the country is increasingly becoming a popular education destination for Nepali students.
Qualifications from New Zealand are ranked amongst the best in the world as guarantees of practical and theoretical competency in graduates. The recent introduction of Post Study Work (PSW) and part-time job facilities by New Zealand authorities have increased the country’s popularity among those seeking foreign degrees. The country has eight government-run universities, 18 polytechnic schools and 100 private colleges and is mostly known for the quality of its technical education. All of these academic institutions are regularly inspected by the Education Review Office (ERO), a government quality assurance agency. Nepali students applying to colleges in New Zealand must have at least a 6.0 IELTS score or a 550 TOEFL score besides having a sound academic background. However, there are many universities which assist students in reaching the required English-language level competency. As in Australia, there is a legal provision in New Zealand to secure students’ investments.

Payments to academic institutions can only be made once a student visa has been confirmed. College tuition for graduate and postgraduate studies range from NZ$ 11,000 to NZ$ 18,000 per year while the annual cost of living has been fixed at NZ $10,000 by The New Zealand High Commission. Mahesh Babu Timilsena, managing  director at Kangaroo Education, says there are numerous options for accommodation—halls of residence, hostels and dormitories (single or double bedrooms) to choose from. “There is also the option of sharing a flat with friends or the ‘home stay’ alternative, both of which will amount to NZ$ 600 per month.” Students can work fulltime on vacations and up to 20 hours per week on college days. The average per hour wage is NZ$ 15. PSW facilities are available to international students for one to two years depending on their graduating courses and education consultants believe all costs of study can be recovered during the PSW period.
